September brought the very sad news that Carnival Stalwart Mr Brian (Basil) Doidge after a very long illness, had passed away.
Brian had served on the Carnival Committee for years but his main passion was the tar barrels and torches. Brian had helped to make and pull them since he was old enough and when his health meant he couldn’t pull he could be found at the front ringing the bell keeping the spectators safe in his firm but kind way.
Brians sons wanted their beloved Dad to be taken to church in the style he would of loved, so together with some of the tar barrel ‘boys’ a sled was built to the classic Hatherleigh design but with only two barrels so that Brians casket could be safely attached to a platform on top. It was pulled to the church by a large number of his tar barrel friends and family in a fitting and poignant tribute to this wonderful, funny, kind tar barrel enthusiast.
