Every brilliant carnival has a brilliant crew behind it. Give a few hours of your time and help put on one of the most spectacular nights in Devon.
Hatherleigh Carnival has been run by volunteers since 1903. Every float that rolls through town, every torch that’s lit and every cup of tea that’s poured happens because local people give their time to make it happen.
The Carnival Committee are always looking for more friendly faces to join the crew. Whether you can spare an hour or a whole weekend, there’s a role for you, and you’ll be part of the team that brings the whole town to life.

Be a friendly face in a hi-vis along the procession route, helping keep floats, walkers and spectators safe and everything moving smoothly. Arguably the best view in town!
Carnival dayWelcome visitors as they arrive, guide cars into the car parks and point people in the right direction. You’re the very first smile our visitors see.
Carnival dayHelp spread the word in the run-up to carnival by dropping posters into shops, pubs, village halls and noticeboards in Hatherleigh and the surrounding villages.
Weeks beforeHelp put out road closure and diversion signs ahead of the event, then collect them back in afterwards, so drivers know what’s happening and everyone stays safe.
Before & afterServe teas, coffees, cakes and a warm welcome in the Old Schools on carnival evening, keeping entrants, helpers and visitors fed, watered and smiling.
Carnival eveningJoin the clean-up crew and help leave Hatherleigh looking as good as we found it. Many hands make light work, and it’s surprisingly satisfying!
After the eventLend a hand at our fundraising events throughout the year, from setting up and running stalls to welcoming guests. Every pound raised keeps the carnival rolling.
